A simple, procedurally generated crate in Houdini with an example Substance painter smart material, includes 5 generated mesh variations and their textures.

Includes

  1. Configurable (.hdalc) with options for generating high and low poly geometry and simulating rope handle physics.
  2. Smart material (.spsm) used in Substance painter for finished examples.
  3. Five finished examples with handles in different places, different plank orientations, different number of planks and textures.

Houdini file usage

Houdini file can either be opened in Houdini or imported to a game engine using Houdini plugin, below are example parameters available for modification:


High poly - Triggers whether generated mesh should be high poly or low poly. In Houdini, one can use this option to export two versions of the mesh, which can then be used in Substance painter for baking.

Handle one/two - Choose on which plank the handles should be generated

Unreal material - Copy the Path reference to the material which is to be used by HDA

Simulation

Frame: This can be used to change position of the rope. The rope it self starts straight up at frame 0, we can choose how long it hangs.

!!Important Reset simulation: After making any changes to simulation, the rope might break, to fix it, all one needs to do is use this button

Load/save to disk: Used for caching simulation.

Workflow example

  1. Open the .hdalc file using Houdini and modify where you wish handles to be.
  2. Generate a low poly and high poly mesh using your generation settings
  3. Create a new Substance Painter project, import and bake your meshes
  4. Import Crate Smart Material in your project and add it to mesh
  5. Make sure that handles are only applied to 1002 tile.

  6. Export textures to Unreal and enable virtual texturing
